[Somayeh Zarei’ s family pleading for their daughter] Somayeh Zarei, a young 25 year-old Iranian woman from the city of Rasht (northern Iran), unintentionally killed her husband in a confrontation five years ago. She had been married for only one year. The young woman has been sentenced to death by the court since then and has been waiting for her sentence to be implemented.
The only way for her to be saved from execution is if she pays 800 million Rials for diyeh (blood money). The blood money should have been paid prior to the month of Ramadan, yet her family was only able to pay 300 million Rials to the victim’s family. She only has until the end of the month of Ramadan to pay the blood money.
Somayeh’s family was forced to sell the little property they owned which was all they had to be able to save their daughter. Somayeh’s older sister has been forced to work in rice fields to pay the expenses of her family.
