The Global Network Defending the Rights of Cartoonists, granted its courage award this year to Atena Faraghdani for the cartoon she drew of the Iranian Majlis deputies and for which she was subsequently sentenced to 12 years and 9 months in jail.
The cartoon criticized the absence of women’s equality in Iran and was applauded by world artists, cartoonists and human rights activists. The award will be granted in her absence.
Despite other candidates like Charlie Hebdo magazine, Atena won this award for her courage in drawing the cartoon about Iranian Majlis, braving to send a letter about her jail conditions to the mullahs’ supreme leader Khamenei, and for the film she disseminated on the Youtube.
