In a letter sponsored by Professor Rita Süssmuth, a number of German MPs urged the European Union to intervene to save the lives of Iranian political prisoners in Gohardasht Prison.
Ms. Rita Süssmuth, former spokeswoman of the German Federal Parliament (Bundestag) also sent a copy of the letter to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The letter by German MPs states in part, “the situation led us to ask the EU to use all its political and diplomatic means to bring pressure on the Iranian regime to save the lives of these prisoners.”
Also, Mrs. Laurence Fehlmann Rielle, member of the Swiss Federal Parliament, sent out a message in solidarity with the political prisoners on hunger strike in Gohardasht Prison.
She emphasized in her message, “There are currently more than 20 prisoners on hunger strike and the physical conditions of many of them are critical. We are truly concerned about the health and safety of political prisoners on hunger strike and urge immediate intervention of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and special rapporteurs of the United Nations.”
