Atena Faraghdani, detained in a notorious prison, described the horrific conditions inside this prison in a phone call on Jan 17, 2015. According to Atena, 82 prisoners are held in a small area and have to share one shower and four toilets. Hot water is cut off after 9 am every day, forcing prisoners to take showers with cold water in winter.
The inhumane conditions have created various illnesses for female prisoners. Qarchak Varamin prison is a run-down building in Tehran’s Varamin area, housing female civil and political prisoners. The conditions and operation of this prison are similar to that of Kahrizak prison, where prisoners are held in over-crowded cells, with minimal food and facilities. Prisoners are often abused by warrens and dangerous prisoners.
