Some 120,000 abnormal babies are born every year in Iran.
The reason for this situation are the population growth laws implemented last year on Khamenei’s order. This was admitted by Heydarzadeh, head of the Department of infants’ health at the Health Ministry.
He said, “If the diagnosis is made on time and before 16 weeks, we can order for a legal abortion but the diagnosis has to be made after two rounds of tests with firm and valid documents. So the 16-week deadline is too short for this procedure.”
Heydarzadeh noted, “Almost all mothers who find out their fetuses are abnormal, undergo illegal abortion which is very dangerous. Nevertheless, those mothers who deliver their abnormal babies, later regret their decision because they suffer very much whenever they look at their infants.”
