Political prisoner Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee has gone into coma after some 60 days of hunger strike. She has been transferred to an unknown hospital.
Ms. Iraee started her hunger strike on February 3, 2018, ten days after being unlawfully transferred and banished to Qarchak Prison in Varamin in violation of the principle of separation of prisoners’ categories. She demands being returned to the Women’s Ward of Evin Prison. Ms. Iraee has refused injection of serum and breaking her hunger strike. She is in critical conditions.
The assistant Prosecutor of Evin has declared that he will not allow Ms. Iraee back to Evin even if she dies.
Ms. Iraee is sentenced to six years in prison for writing an unpublished story against the inhuman sentence of stoning. Her husband, Arash Sadeghi, is also imprisoned and sentenced to 19 years.
In the course of the uprising in December and January, Ms. Iraee sent out an open letter from prison, calling on young protesters to remain steadfast in their quest for freedom and pay any price in this path. It was in retaliation to this letter, that Ms. Iraee and her cellmate, Atena Daemi, were summoned several times and finally brutalized and transferred to Qarchak Prison in the dark of the night on January 24, 2018.
Qarchak or Shahr-e Ray Prison is a disused chicken farm used to detain ordinary women criminals. The sanitary conditions in this prison are deplorable and even the water is salty and not suitable for drinking.
