A group of teachers including women staged a protest outside the Department of Education in Khark Island, in the Persian Gulf south of Iran.
The protest took place on Monday, April 9, 2018, against the National Oil Company’s failure to provide free transportation to the port of Boushehr, lying along the southern coasts of Iran.
Khark Island is located 38 kms from the coast of Bandar Gonaveh, one of the counties of Boushehr. One of the major problems of teachers in this island is the heavy expenses of transportation between Khark and Boushehr.
In October 2017, the principal of Mottahari Highschool in Khark had declared that the transportation problem had left his classes without teachers. Earlier in September, the director of the Education Department had announced that the transportation of teachers in Khark is one of their many problems because of the high expenses. Teachers must spend about half of their salaries to have a family trip from Khark to Boushehr.
