For the first time, a woman was elected as Rome’s mayor

The second round of elections in the main cities of Italy were concluded on Sunday, June 19. In Rome, Mrs. Virginia Raggi, won 65 per cent of the votes cast.

Mrs. Raggi, 37, is married with two children. She has studied judicial law and is a lawyer. She became politically active in 2011 as a member of one of the districts of Rome’s City Council. She is the first woman to be elected as mayor.

 

 

Also, in Turin, Ms. Chiara Appendino, gained 54 per cent of the votes and became mayor of the city. Appendino called her victory as “historic” and pointed out, “This election is a step towards change towards human dignity.”
