Iran: Absence of laws protecting women heads of households

“We have no laws to provide special protection to women heads of households.”

This was the remark made by Zahra Saii, member of the Social Committee of the Iranian parliament (Majlis). In an interview published on January 16, 2017, she said, “The field of women heads of households has been ignored such that there is no laws to give special protection to women heads of households.”

Zahra Saii reiterated, “Only dropper sums of money are given to these women every month; while unfortunately these women have no other source of income. Many of these women are young and have to take care of a household. Their living conditions are very difficult. These also include women who have bad-guardians (i.e. ill or addicted husbands) and have to grapple with such problems.” (The state-run Mehr news agency – January 16, 2017)
