Iran: I would rather be a protesting woman in jail – Nargess Mohammadi

Political prisoner Narges Mohammadi

In the wake of implementation of the new stage of her jail sentence lasting 10 years, human rights advocate Nargess Mohammadi in a letter leaked out from Evin Prison on April 11, 2017, wrote:

“I welcome spring… At this moment and in this place, I would rather be a free human being with willpower instead of being captivated by lack of will despite being ostensibly free. Instead of being a woman deprived of her human rights, instead of being silent and submissive, I would rather be a protesting woman albeit in prison. Instead of being a mother who sits alongside her children turned unfortunate in the future, I would rather be a mother persisting on the future human rights of the children of my homeland, although I am imprisoned in Evin.”
