Iran: Discrimination in compensating for victims of fire

Discrimination in compensating for victims of fire

Girl children who suffered severe burns in the fire of Shinabad School, in Piranshahr, northwestern Iran, have been reimbursed for half the full amount just because they are girls.

The lawyer of the girls who burned in a fire accident in Shinabad School five years ago, wrote an open letter to the mullahs’ President, Hassan Rouhani complaining that because of the irresponsible approach of the incumbent authorities at the Department of Education, these girls have been suffering for five years but their compensation has not been paid in full because of their gender, which is a violation of their human rights.

Hossein Ahmadi wrote in part, “The government is responsible for these girls. According to the articles of the Constitution, the government is absolutely responsible and obliged to find appropriate solutions for restituting their rights and providing them treatment even if it is in hospitals abroad. The government must adopt suitable measures to prevent repetition of similar incidents. With regards to the compensation, I believe the full compensation must be paid for all the girls and the two girls who died, Siran Yeganeh and Saria Rasoulzadeh.”

On December 5, 2012, fire broke out at an elementary school in Shinabad village of Piranshahr, due to a defect in the classroom’s heater. 37 girl students suffered burns to various degrees. Two of the students, Siran Yeganeh and Saria Rasoulzadeh, died due to severe burns and the rest of the girls have been suffering in the past five years since the incident.
