Prosecution of journalists persists: Parisa Salehi is handed down one year in prison

Parisa Salehi, a journalist, was sentenced to one year in prison and supplementary punishments.

The Revolutionary Court of Karaj recently handed down a one-year sentence for Parisa Salehi on the charge of disseminating “propaganda against the state.”

She has also been sentenced to two years of internal exile to the city of Zanjan, a two-year ban on social network activities, and another two-year ban on departing the country.

Parisa Salehi is a master’s student of economy at Tehran University and works as an economic journalist for the Donya-e Eghtesad daily newspaper.

Security forces ransacked her residence in Karaj, on September 8, 2023. Then, she was summoned to the Courthouse of Karaj where she was arraigned for disseminating propaganda against the state. Karaj is Iran’s fourth largest city located 36 kms west of Tehran.

Elaheh Ramezanpour

Another journalist’s residence was ransacked by security forces in Gorgan, 400 kms to the northeast of Tehran, on January 22, 2024. The agents confiscated some of her personal belongings, including her laptop computer, mobile phone, and some handwritten notes.

Elaheh Ramezanpour writes about health issues and worked for Golestan-e Rasa news website.

Ms. Ramezanpour said she had been threatened by the Prosecutor’s Office of Gorgan for writing critical stories.

According to Reporters Without Borders, Iran is the world’s biggest prison of journalists.
