Early Life and Education
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a steadfast advocate for justice and human rights, passed away on Friday in Houston at the age of 74. Born on January 12, 1950, in Queens, New York, she dedicated nearly three decades to serving as a Democratic representative for Texas, becoming a prominent voice for progressive causes and racial justice.
Sheila Jackson Lee was known for her relentless pursuit of equality and her commitment to the causes she believed in. Her political journey began after she graduated from Yale University with a degree in political science in 1972 and earned a law degree from the University of Virginia in 1975. Marriage brought her to Houston, where she initially worked as a lawyer and later became a judge in 1987.
Political Career
Her political career truly took off in 1990 when she joined Houston’s City Council. Four years later, in 1994, she was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where she served her constituents with unwavering dedication. Throughout her tenure, she became known for her fearless advocacy and her ability to bring about meaningful change.
Legislative Achievements
Sheila Jackson Lee played a crucial role in significant legislative achievements, including the establishment of Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021, marking the emancipation of the last enslaved African Americans in Texas. She also led efforts to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, protecting women from domestic violence and expanding protections for marginalized communities.
Advocacy for the Iranian Resistance
In addition to her national accomplishments, she was a dedicated supporter of the Iranian Resistance and the PMOI members in Ashraf. As co-Chair of the Iranian Women Caucus in Congress, she was instrumental in co-sponsoring numerous resolutions on human rights for the Iranian people. Her commitment to defending the rights and freedoms of the Iranian people, especially the women of the Iranian Resistance, was unwavering. She stood against the clerical regime and policies of appeasement, advocating for justice and democratic principles. At the Free Iran World Summit in 2021, she proudly declared her support for removing unjust labels from the Iranian Resistance and ensuring the world knew the story of the freedom fighters in Iran.
Speech at the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was the co-chair of the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus at the US House of Representatives. In part of her remarks at the first meeting of this caucus on May 18, 2023, she said:
“As founding co-chair of the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus, I’m honored to be here today to hold the first joint meeting of the newly formed Iranian (Women) Congressional Caucus and pleased to hear with the Iran Human Rights and Democracy Caucus on the situation of women and human rights in Iran, and what Congress can do to help the Iranian people achieve their freedom.
“Last month, I introduced H. Res. 310, a bipartisan resolution, condemning the inaction by the Islamic Republic of Iran in addressing the poisoning of Iranian school girls, the daughters of the Iranian revolution. This resolution recognizes the bravery and resilience of women who have faced tremendous challenges in their fight for equality and human rights.
“We have all witnessed the courage of women and youth leading the 2022 protest in Iran, calling for social freedom and political change. All they ask for is a moment of freedom, dignity, and respect. And they got death, poisoning. As stated in the resolution, these protests, for more than four decades, of organized resistance against the Iranian dictatorship led by women who have endured torture, sexual and gender-based evidence, and death.
“As a long-time advocate for justice and equality, I’m inspired by the ongoing revolution led by Iranian women. And I cannot say more about all of you who have come to know over 25 years and never given up. As our famous civil rights and Congressman said, never giving in and never giving up. Continuing to have the spirit of fight and remembering those who cannot speak for themselves. That is why we’re here. To speak for those who cannot speak for themselves.”
Committee Work and Continued Service
Throughout her career, Jackson Lee served on several important committees, including the Judiciary, Homeland Security, and Budget committees. As the chairwoman of the Judiciary Subcommittee for Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security, she worked tirelessly to advance civil rights, national security, and social justice.
Despite her diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, Sheila Jackson Lee continued to serve her constituents and campaign for what would have been her 16th term in office. Her indomitable spirit and dedication to public service were evident even in her final days.
